KFS Board Corner

March 2025

Our Board welcomed a new Chair and director this year, and it’s a good time to explain how our Board prepares them for their duties. “Onboarding” is an important part of integrating any new person into an organization, and the KFS is no exception. Most importantly, new directors receive board governance training, which covers, among many other topics, the roles of different board positions, how the board interacts with our Executive Director (who handles the day-to-day running of our theatre), and the roles of various committees. They also complete an online course in Robert’s Rules of Order, the basis of formal meeting structure, and receive a short presentation on financial literacy, which is critical to understanding how the organization manages its funds. Throughout their time on the board, directors receive ongoing professional development to support them as members of the cinema community and as members of a team that works together to promote film in our community. All these elements are valuable to our ongoing success as a board.

The 29th annual Kamloops Film Festival is now behind us, and our KFS Board supported the festival by participating in the events surrounding the films. We’re proud of the work of the Kamloops Film Festival Committee and its many volunteers and look forward to seeing what next year’s 30th KFF will bring.

In April, the Paramount celebrates its 70th anniversary, and our board will be leading several important celebrations. We are partnering with the Kamloops Museum & Archives (KMA) exhibition, “Wide Angle: The Landscape of Kamloops in Film,” to showcase the history of theatres in Kamloops, and the Paramount is an important part of that story in our community. The exhibition debuts on April 11th, and events are being planned at the theatre that same weekend to both look back at our past and look forward to our future in downtown Kamloops.

We’re looking forward to sharing more board activities over the coming year. If you have any questions about the KFS Board, we’ll try and address them in future editions. Email us at [email protected]
