You voted and the winner of Hollywood Suite’s “Party!” Movie Madness bracket is…DAZED AND CONFUSED!

Taking place over one night in 1976, as the Texas school year draws to a close, DAZED AND CONFUSED proves that no one throws a cinematic bacchanal quite like director Richard Linklater. Released in 1993 on the heels of Sundance hit Slacker, DAZED AND CONFUSED was pitched as a “teenage rock’n’roll spree.” His first foray into Hollywood filmmaking, Linklater somehow retained his patented DIY, improvisational indie spirit, despite studio interference. Invited to the party was Linklater’s trusted cinematographer Lee Daniel, who subverted Steadicam norms and opted for a handheld feel to capture the freedom of the 1970s.

For casting extras and minor roles, Linklater looked to the local high schools of Austin, finding his motley crew of teen stoners, who intermixed seamlessly with up-and-coming actors Parker Posey, Jason London, and Joey Lauren Adams. And after encountering a university film student named Matthew McConaughey at a hotel bar, Linklater cast his Wooderson (expanding the role greatly)—despite fears that the burgeoning actor was too handsome. DAZED AND CONFUSED is like every memorable party: “art crossed with anthropology” with a “painful underside” (Roger Ebert).
